What is anodising?

Sulphuric anodising is an electrolytic process most commonly used for the protective treatment of aluminium. The process forms a clear silver coloured coating which can subsequently be dyed to a specified colour. The process involves the oxidation of the aluminium surface, which forms a thin layer of aluminium oxide under controlled chemical conditions. Please note the process will not hide any surface imperfections on the aluminium substrate.

Colours available include:

  • Clear
  • Black
  • Red
  • Blue
  • Yellow

DEF STAN 03-25 and BS1615 compliant

The nature of the process will generally degrade the surface finish of aluminium which should be considered when deciding the quality of the surface material to be used. The anodising process requires an electrical contact point at all times during the treatment so a very small set of jig marks will always appear after treatment. The process provides a coating of between 5-20 microns thick, and where colour dyeing is required a surface coating of 15-25 microns is recommended.
